Текст 1: «A Day in the Life of a Lawyer»

I’ve been a lawyer for 25 years․ I love it, but it’s not for everyone․ Ability to write and (depending on the specific field) argue are definitely critical․ But at least as important are patience, reading comprehension, and the ability to explain concepts succinctly․ The people who truly excel at it are also diligent, creative, and extroverted (which is especially useful for attracting clients)․ I spend most of my day on the phone or emailing clients and adversaries․ I used to research, write briefs, and go to court much more often, but now I mostly have associates do that for me․ I market by writing articles and speaking at events․ I work at a large firm so I also devote a lot of time to administration and committees․

I’m in the office around 40-45 hours a week, plus I respond to client messages after hours․ Earlier in my career I worked more like 50-55, occasionally more․ If you’re on the fence about a career in law, consider taking an internship or job at a law firm, court, or legal department․ I did that and it really helped me decide․ I’ll add that the people I knew who went to law school for the wrong reasons — just to make money, to please their parents, to get into politics/business, etc․ — all of them regretted it․

Текст 2: «Why Law Might Not Be for Everyone»

Tread with caution, my friend; Law is full of people like you — good writers, liberal arts background, etc․ — who are miserable․ People that thought law was a reasonable next step, without actually knowing what the practice of law was like․ Law can be a wonderful career․ You get to help people, often when they need it most․ Your writing skills will develop in ways no other course of study can do․ You’ll learn tons, and your way of thinking and processing information will change forever․

That being said, law is a horrible decision for most people․ Your life will be driven by deadlines for the rest of forever․ If you miss those deadlines, you literally can be sued and lose your license․ Law is adversarial by nature, and when people come to you they typically in the worst moments of their lives․ Also, pay is only respectable in certain circumstances․

Текст 3: «Essential Legal English Vocabulary»

  • Attorney — Another word for lawyer․
  • Brief — A written legal argument submitted to a court․
  • Litigation — The process of taking legal action․
  • Arbitration — A method of resolving disputes outside of court․
  • Deposition — A witness’s sworn out-of-court testimony․

Текст 4: «How to Improve Legal English»

Just keep on reading Supreme Court cases because the language of the law is inscribed in each of the SC Cases․ My favorite ponente is Justice Carpio, but if you want to read SC decisions that will challenge you, Justice Leonen’s ponencia usually requires to have a dictionary beside me․ Speaking of dictionaries, having a copy of Black’s Law Dictionary is of prime importance․ You can also read books written by lawyers such as John Grisham if you’re looking for some light reading․

Текст 5: «Career Motivation and Responsibilities»

Career Motivation: Interest in justice and helping others drives the choice to become a lawyer․
Job Responsibilities: Lawyers provide legal advice, represent clients, and negotiate settlements․
Required Skills: Essential skills include communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving;
Education Path: Becoming a lawyer typically requires a degree, LSAT, law school, and passing the bar exam․

Текст 6: «The Role of a Lawyer in Society»

As advocates, they may present evidence and argue in support of their client for settlements outside of court, such as through plea bargaining or arbitration, or during court appearances, such as in hearings and trials․ As advisors, they counsel clients about their legal rights, obligations, and options and suggest courses of action․ Lawyers may have different titles and duties, depending on where they work․
